Research opportunities are also available via Action Research Grants to support collaboration between New York State researchers and teachers on topics relevant to teachers. Proposals are due by July 1, and projects must be completed by the following June. Projects are shared at the NYSSMA Winter conference and summaries are published in School Music News. The general call is provided here, and the annual call for proposals typically appears in the April issue of School Music News.

Research Grant Summaries from School Music News

Interested individuals from around the country can also publish research-related articles in School Music News. You do not need to be a NYSSMA member to submit and proposals (abstracts describing a manuscript) and completed manuscripts are accepted on a rolling basis.

Call for Submissions

The New York State School Music Association Research Committee seeks brief research-based contributions to our state magazine, School Music News. Contributions can be summaries of original research, research-based practical articles, or articles about research more generally and should be written for a readership of practitioners.

We consider both proposals (abstracts between 150-250 words) and completed manuscripts (APA 7 form, up to 1500 words not including references). Please send a proposal (150-250 words) or full manuscript (up to 1500 words) the NYSSMA Research Chair, Dr. Mara E. Culp at

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. Research committee members will review the proposals and send notifications of acceptance, typically within 90 days of submission.
