A Message from our Collegiate President:

Hello all and welcome back!

It is my pleasure to welcome back our collegiate members around the state. We have an exciting year ahead of us and I cannot wait to share it with you all.

New additions have been made to our website!  You can now use our tabs under “Collegiate-NYSSMA” to find the information that you need.  If you cannot find what you are looking for, check the FAQs tab or ask an officer – we are always here to help!

Our purpose, as officers, is to help YOU.  Please do not be afraid to reach out to any one of us if you have concerns, questions, or suggestions.  Your voice is important to us!  It is our goal to serve WITH you and not for you. We hope to stay connected through this upcoming year and the future.

This upcoming year it is my goal, as President, to strengthen communication between chapters throughout the state and to share resources for online teaching.  This will be beneficial for our members because as we prepare to enter schools upon graduation, we must be able to adapt to our surroundings and situations.  I plan to research platforms, programs, and articles that we will all succeed in using, no matter the musical focus. Please keep an eye out for updates, and do not hesitate to reach out!

A Message from our Collegiate President-Elect:

Hello everybody!

My name is Christopher McAfee, and I am absolutely elated to be representing what is quite possibly the greatest corps of future teachers in the world. I trust that every last one of you shares my enthusiasm for the opportunities at hand in shaping the future of music education. First off, I would like to make one thing clear: biases, inequities, and a lack of cultural appreciation in the classroom must end now, and we have no excuse not to be sure it ends with us. It takes intention, it takes action, and it takes having real conversations with your colleagues and yourself to make sure we are all constantly learning and growing as educators no matter how long we spend in service. Now more than ever, as New York State’s future music educators we must come together as colleagues, not competitors, and join in raising each other up to continue growing and improving as a body of music education. Over the next year, I hope to begin arranging more and more opportunities for us to work with each other as both colleagues and friends, culminating in our Biennial Collegiate Summit at Syracuse University in 2022. Although, I call now for you all to go out and cultivate these opportunities for yourself. Find other chapters on Facebook and Instagram, reach out via social media or email, and spend time sharing in ideas, media, and our passion for music education.

I hope to have the opportunity to see all of your lovely faces soon, be it virtually for Joseph Sugar Day or any other Collegiate experience we find the chance for soon.

Peace and love,

Christopher McAfee, President-Elect

A Message from our Collegiate Advisor:

Welcome to the Collegiate NYSSMA Webpage brought to you on behalf of NYSSMA and our state collegiate members and faculty advisors.

As you check out the webpage, take a few minutes to get to know your state representatives, review our handbooks and updates, social media links for our chapters, current and past newsletters, as well as any other information.

Across the state, our collegiate chapters have been recognized for their positive contributions to music education at local, state and national levels. This continued success speaks to the caliber of music education in the great state of New York.

I am proud of the work of our state collegiate officers, especially for their commitment to their peers, NYSSMA and NAfME, as well as bringing a 21st century perspective to the future of music education.
