President: Emma Uruburu, she/her

Emma Uruburu is a Senior Music Education major at The Crane School of Music. As a trumpet player, her primary focus is in instrumental music. She is from Fair Haven New York where she plays in a community band and church bell choir during the summers. Emma is a very active member of her campus and home community. At Crane, she is a member of NAfME and NYSBDA, and at home, she teaches private brass and piano lessons. Emma is very passionate about equitable learning opportunities for all students, hoping to make some progress on that topic during her presidency. In her free time, Emma loves spending time with her family and foster siblings, jet skiing on the lake, and going to Disney. Emma is looking forward to working with all of the brilliant minds on this e-board and throughout New York this year.

President-Elect: Austin Stroup, he/him

Austin Stroup is a Junior BM Music Education major at Nazareth College. His primary is tuba, but is also heavily involved with his church community at Calvary Assembly playing bass guitar on the worship team. Last year Austin served as Nazareth’s NAfME Chapter President and is excited for the opportunity to get more involved in the professional community. In the past year he was an RA, started working at Pontillo’s in Bushnell’s Basin, and got engaged and will be married this July! Austin is excited to serve as president-elect and help to represent the collegiate music community at large while making a strong impact on music education experiences for his peers and colleagues.

Secretary-Treasurer: Adrianna Massaro, she/her

Adrianna Massaro (she/her) is a junior student at Nazareth College. She is in the BM program for Music Education, with a concentration in vocal/choral music. Adrianna spent the last year serving as the Vice President of Nazareth’s NAfME Chapter, and is thrilled to be doing the same this year! A native of Rochester and graduate of Webster Schroeder High School, she has been involved in music since middle school. In her free time, Adrianna loves to spend time with her friends, play Dungeons and Dragons, read fantasy novels, and play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competitively. Adrianna is very excited to be this year’s Treasurer/Secretary for Collegiate NYSSMA and to work with other members from all around the state!

Web Editor: Katie Dessert, she/her

Katie Dessert is a graduate student studying Music Education at SUNY Fredonia. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2022 from SUNY Fredonia with her MUSB in Music Education with a concentration in Voice/General Music. Katie spent the last year serving as the C-NYSSMA Province 1 Representative, and is thrilled to be a part of the e-board for another year as Web Editor. Katie is an active member of the music community, specifically around Western New York. She teaches private music lessons to students of all all ages from across the country through her private music studio as well as the non-profit organization Through The Staff. In her free time, Katie enjoys spending time with her friends, playing Mario Kart, listening to true crime podcasts, knitting, and spending time outdoors. 

 

Province Representatives:

Province 1: Mallory Williams, she/her

Mallory is a senior Music Education major at SUNY Fredonia with a concentration in instrumental music education/trumpet. Mallory is the president of the Fredonia NAfME chapter this year and was last year as well. She is super excited for this experience as Province 1 Representative and can’t wait to work with other C-NAfME members!

Province 2: Emily Overacker, she/her

Emily Overacker is a junior student at Nazareth  College. She is currently working towards her B.M. in Music Education with a concentration in Vocal Music. Emily is also the 2022-2023 Secretary of Nazareth’s NAfME Chapter. Emily has been living in the Rochester & adjacent communities for her entire life. She has been an avid music participant since elementary school. In addition, Emily plays the flute in the Night Flyers band at Nazareth and traveled in May 2022 to Ireland with the Wind Symphony at Nazareth. In her free time, she enjoys binge watching Supernatural, watching true crime documentaries, and jamming out to Taylor Swift. Emily is thrilled to be the Province 2 representative and work with various NAfME and NYSSMA members in the state!

Province 3: Hanna Cozzolino, she/her

Hanna Cozzolino is a rising senior music education student with a concentration in voice on the choral and general music tracks at The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. Hanna spent this past year serving as the President of Crane’s NAfME Chapter. Her hometown is Smithtown, NY on Long Island. Hanna’s interests other than music are painting, spending time with her friends and pets, and enjoying nature. She is very excited to represent Province 3 this year!

Province 4/5: Nicolas Auxila, he/him

Nicolas Auxila is a junior music education major at Hofstra University on Long Island. His primary instruments are trombone and euphonium, playing in the Hofstra Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and various Chamber Ensembles. Nicolas currently serves as the Treasurer for Hofstra’s NYSBDA Chapter, and enjoys arranging and writing music. He hopes to become an engaging and effective music educator, with the versatility to teach all aspects of music. Outside of music, he can be found throwing a frisbee and catching up on shows. He’s thrilled to enter Collegiate-NYSSMA this year, representing Province 4/5!

Province 6: Angela Burtulato, she/her

Angela Burtulato is a senior music education major with a concentration in Voice (Soprano) at New York University Steinhardt. She calls Philadelphia, PA her hometown. On campus, Angela serves as RA and as the President for A Class Act NYU  She also has sung in University Singers and NYU Chorale. Along with classical and choral performances, Angela likes musical theatre, and has performed in various musicals since the age of 7. She also enjoys spending time with her friends and family, and discovering new music to listen to and/or perform! Angela is ecstatic to meet other music educators, and hopes to build stronger connections among us all. She is extremely grateful for this opportunity and is excited to represent Province 6 for another year!

Province 7: Madison Garraffo, she/her

Madison Garraffo is a junior Music Education major with a minor in Disability Studies at Hofstra University. Her primary instrument is viola, and can be often seen doubling on violin in numerous ensembles, including the Hofstra Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, University Choir, and String and Piano Ensemble! Madison is currently the Public Relations Chair for Hofstra’s NAfME Chapter, and is a founding member of Hofstra’s DREAM (Disability Rights, Education, Activism, and Mentoring) Chapter. She hopes to use her Hofstra education and experiences to become an inclusive music educator in regard to diversity, equity, and inclusion in her future classrooms. In her free time, she can be found in coffee shops, riding her bike, or chatting in ASL! She’s super excited to represent Province 7 again this year and can’t wait to connect with other schools!
