Description
The SGLC is an all inclusive Chorus singing with pride since 1991, consisting of LGBTQ+ singers, volunteers, and allies who believe in the power of music to build connection, foster belonging, and celebrate our shared stories. Our mission is to bring people together through choral artistry, creating a safe and inclusive space where individuals can grow, express themselves, and contribute to a musical tradition that has strengthened Central New York for 35 years. We have had a successful history of talented, creative, kind, and organized Directors, and are currently accepting applications to fill this critical position. While this position is open to anyone regardless of sexual orientation, we are looking for a Director who is comfortable either being openly part of the LGBTQ+ community themselves, or is an ally who is comfortable identifying themselves as the Director of a queer chorus. The Choral Director’s duties include: Conduct regular rehearsal, or appoint a replacement in case of absence. Conduct concerts and performances, including potential outside musicians. Arrange and conduct section placement meetings with singers. Work with various committees to select music, prepare the chorus for performance, and oversee the creative requirements of the chorus. Communicate with the Chorus and Board regularly about songs, rehearsal agenda, season outline, etc. Select musicians for performances as needed. Maintain a YouTube or other platform of rehearsal tracks. Report to the Board of Directors at each regular Board meeting and as needed. Perform other duties as deemed appropriate. Other We are a non-auditioned chorus, and heartily welcome new members to join us during the first three weeks of each season. At that time, the Choral Director will guide new members to one of the SATB sections that is most comfortable to their range, and to further division if needed. Our two main concerts are a winter performance in either December or January, and a Pride concert held in late spring. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings, from 7p to 9:15p at Plymouth Congregational Church, 232 E. Onondaga St, Syracuse.
Requirements
Well-qualified candidates will have:
a degree in music, such as Conducting, Music Education, or Vocal Music;
a minimum of three (3) years choral conducting experience;
and the creative, interpersonal, and administrative skills necessary to lead the Chorus musically and artistically in an SATB repertoire.
