Suggested Assessment
I start sight reading in one key and stay with that key for 2 weeks, then I assess the students in groups of 2-3 with novice singers and solo for advanced singers. At the end of the year, I change keys daily.
Lately I have used Sight Reading Factory assessment so students can submit assessment virtually. If you don't have SRF, create exercises that stay within the bounds of the NYSSMA sight reading criteria for the grade level the student is at.
I have also had students create sight reading exercises to share with their peers. Brings in CREATING artistic process. I also use NYSSMA sight reading criteria for this exercise.
Enduring Understanding
Anchor Standard 5
To express their musical ideas, musicians analyze, evaluate, and refine their performance over time through openness to new ideas, persistence, and the application of appropriate criteria
Anchor Standard 6
Musicians judge expression and technique in prepared performances by using criteria that vary across time, place, and culture. The context and how a work is presented
influence the audience response.
Essential Question
How do musicians improve the quality of their performance?
• When is musical work ready to present?
How is technical accuracy through a prepared work?
