Procedure

1) Students listen to two contrasting pieces that highlight a particular musical element such as tempo or dynamics. (Example: For tempo, "Largo" from New World Symphony by A. Dvorak and "The Stars And Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa).

2) Students should freely create movements to each piece of music as they listen.

3) Discuss the movements students created and why they moved that way. Focus students' movement choices on the highlighted musical element and make conscious the vocabulary terms associated with that element.

Suggested Assessment

Provide students with a list of familiar pieces from class. Given a sentence starter ask students to describe the tempo in each piece ("In the piece ___________, the tempo is _________________.")

Additional Activity: Play "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" by Edvard Grieg and have students move to the beat as it accelerates. Ask the students to describe the change in tempo.

Enduring Understanding

Re7 - Response to music is informed by analyzing context (social, cultural, and historical) and how creators and performers manipulate the elements of music.

Re8 - Through their use of elements and structures of music, creators and performers provide clues to their expressive intent.

Essential Question

Re7 - How does understanding the structure and context of music inform a response?

Re8 - How do we discern the musical creators and performers' expressive intent?
