Procedure
1) Listen to suspenseful pieces of music such as “In the Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg and identify techniques that composers use to build and release tension. Students generate a list of techniques that can be used in their compositions.
2) Teach students about ABA form. In this context the first A section serves the purpose of building tension, the B section is the climax, and the second A section is the release of tension.
3) Using a Digital Audio Workstation such as Soundtrap, Garageband, or Ableton, students will compose a piece in ABA form utilizing at least three different techniques for building and releasing tension.
