Procedure

In the rehearsal setting:
Chorus students identify parts of the body used in singing as they explore relaxation, posture and breathing exercises and their effect on tone production.
Band students identify accurate posture and playing position, and explore variables (i.e. embouchure, breath support, tongue) and their effect on tone production.
Orchestra students identify accurate posture and playing position and explore variables (i.e. bow angle, placement, weight, speed) and their effect on tone production.
Students listen to recordings and to one another in performance.
Students share recordings of exemplary performers and analyze tone quality.
Students listen to music of various styles and cultures and discuss how tone and tone production may vary.
Students perform a piece utilizing quality, appropriate tone production.

Suggested Assessment

Teacher may assess students orally or in writing on their technical knowledge.
Teacher develops rubrics and uses them to evaluate student written critiques of each other's performances and/or their listening or repertoire lists.
Given a simple rhythmic pattern, students perform with a consistent quality of tone and appropriate dynamics. Teacher critiques student performance.
