Job Description: The Scarsdale Public Schools seek to sponsor each student's full development, enabling our youth to be effective and independent contributors in a democratic society and an interdependent world. Scarsdale Middle School has an anticipated vacancy for a full-time probationary Choral/General music teaching position starting August 27, 2025. The school spans grades 6-8 and offers a rich and varied educational program to the high-achieving student population of approximately 1100 students. The school community boasts an accomplished faculty and staff along with an active and supportive parent body. Candidates must hold appropriate NYS K-12 music certification. Experience as a school choral director as well experience teaching middle school general music are essential. Knowledge and background in middle school choral/vocal pedagogy, repertoire, and performance practice are essential including success supporting students as they progress through the changing voice. student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and creating a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.Essential Functions Develops and administers culturally responsive music education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to student learning in both large ensemble and small class settings Participates in developing dynamic curricula in conjunction with middle school and district-wide music department colleagues Collaborates willingly with immediate colleagues including consistent communication and follow through Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of current technologies including music software and web-based platforms as well as apps and software used for general education needs Develops lessons to organize class time so that students have adequate opportunities for preparation, rehearsal, instruction, and reflection Conducts ongoing assessment of student musical learning and progress and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs including students with special needs Conducts individual and small group instruction as needed Utilizes repertoire of varied genres as appropriate Plans, coordinates rehearsals for, and directs students in musical programs and performances outside of the classroom As a reflective practitioner, continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, and professional meetings or by conducting research Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to ensure a productive learning atmosphere during class time, rehearsals, and performances Coordinates with other professional staff members, including house counselors, special education teachers, secretaries, department members, and other middle school staff and participates in faculty meetings and committees Selects and requisitions appropriate music supplies and music equipment, maintains inventory records, and ensures equipment is in good working order Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the superintendent Equipment Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone Travel Requirements Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of current music teaching methods and educational pedagogy Ability to instruct students in middle school level choral literature including choosing appropriate repertoire to support student motivation, skill development, and vocal health Knowledge of and ability to instruct students with changing voices Ability to instruct students in music literacy that is aligned with the general music program in the building Ability to instruct students in a general music environment that includes project-based learning as well as playing classroom instruments such as ukulele, guitar, piano keyboard and world drums Ability to use technology in the classroom as well as teach in and troubleshoot a computer lab environment with music technology and MIDI keyboards Ability to prepare for multiple annual chorus concert performances Ability to prepare for and help organize school assemblies when appropriate Theatre background is a plus Knowledge of or familiarity with sound, lighting, and video recording systems or willingness to learn is a plus Knowledge of differentiation in instruction based upon student learning styles Knowledge of English grammar and mechanics, word usage, word denotations and connotations, literature, and other content areas taught Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed Ability to organize and coordinate work Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards Works in standard office and school building environments Qualifications Profile Certification/License: NY State Certification in Music (K-12) Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment Master's degree preferred Experience: Successful prior teaching experience in music for the appropriate grade levels is preferred.
