The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, a community orchestra based in Brooklyn, NY, invites applications for a permanent Artistic Director starting with its 2025-2026 season. The position is part time and eligible for compensation. MUSICAL RESPONSIBILITIES Propose musical programming to the Board of Directors for approval, working within an approved budget. Coordinate with librarians and other personnel on the acquisition, rental and distribution of scores. Work with section leaders on bowings and markings. Conduct all rehearsals and concerts as agreed by contract and supervise the work of any guest conductors. Rehearsals are on Mondays from 7pm – 9:45pm, September – May/June. Assist with the planning and organizing of auditions for membership. Select and approve new players; select principal players, assist with determining seating within each section. Work with the personnel manager on player outreach and development. Exercise leadership in developing the artistic quality of the orchestra. Collaborate with the Board of Directors in developing long-range artistic and development plans for the orchestra such as special concerts, chamber ensemble programs, tours, etc. Stay abreast of artistic activities in the orchestra field. Recommend to the Board of Directors new activities that may advance the orchestra’s objectives. NON-MUSICAL RESPONSIBILITIES Assist the Board of Directors in playing a visible and active role in the community. Help develop the overall public image of the orchestra in the community and beyond. Assist the Board of Directors in fundraising and developing relationships with government funding entities, foundations, music organizations, individual donors and potential patrons. Assist the Board of Directors in the development and execution of non-artistic activities that help manage and grow the organization. Attend Board meetings and provide reports on artistic activities.



The ideal candidate will possess exceptional musicianship and conducting skills with relevant experience, including work with volunteer musicians and knowledge of a broad range of repertoire. The candidate will have the vision and passion to make classical music exciting for New York audiences, possessing strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills that will inspire the orchestra’s musicians to perform at their highest potential. The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra performing concerts of classical, romantic, 20th-century and contemporary works at the Brooklyn Museum, in addition to concerts of smaller ensembles throughout the borough. Founded in 1973, the orchestra, a mix of talented amateur, semi-professional, and professional musicians, is made up of people from all walks of life from Brooklyn and the surrounding communities. The BSO is run under the auspices of the Brooklyn Heights Music Society, a 501(c)3 charitable organization.

Qualified candidates will be selected for interviews in the Spring of 2024. Finalists will conduct a full program cycle during the BSO’s 2024-2025 season, with the selected candidate notified in April 2025.
