Description

We are pleased to announce an immediate vacancy at the Grand Street Campus High Schools (PROGRESS High School) for the position of Music Teacher. The selected candidate will join a team of four full time music faculty at the Grand Street Campus, one of the largest and most successful music programs in the New York City Public School System (NYCDOE). This position is full time, with full health, pension, retirement benefits and salary based on the current United Federation of Teachers contract with New York City. The successful candidate will be responsible for one period of piano lab, one period of theater technology and will be responsible for maintaining our school's auditorium calendar for the academic year. In addition to this, the successful candidate will be responsible for 3 additional periods of music classes based on their areas of expertise. Classes taught could include but are not limited to - vocal music, piano lab, strings, musical theater, music theory, music technology, percussion or wind band. Each of these classes will meet daily. Again, we want to stress that 60% of this position will be based around the strengths of the successful candidate; we are looking to hire an outstanding music teacher and will create a schedule that has them teaching towards their strengths. We are looking for someone to continue the growth of our music program in their specific area(s) of specialty. About our current program: The bands at the Grand Street Campus (GSC) offer over 350 students the opportunity to play music of high artistic merit at their level of proficiency, from beginner to highly advanced. Students are placed into the differing levels of bands - Concert/Beginner Band, Repertory Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble - based on ability. GSC’s inventory of 550 school owned instruments allows any student to join band, free of charge. In addition to the four main wind bands at the Grand Street Campus, the program offers two full jazz ensembles, three modern bands, a Latin jazz band, theater technology, piano lab and a full musical theater program. Approximately 90% of the band students at GSC begin their musical training in high school. Despite this late start, the four concert bands and three jazz bands at the school consistently receive the top ratings of “Gold” and “Gold with Distinction” at the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) festival, often participating at levels five and six. In addition to NYSSMA and two full concerts a year, the Grand Street Campus also hosts the All-City High School Marching Band, the All-City High School Concert Band, NYSSMA Majors Festival #20 and the NYC High School Honors Music Festival (NYSSMA Zone 12 Area All-State). Located in the popular neighborhood of East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the Grand Street Campus consists of three smaller high schools - PROGRESS High School, East Williamsburg Scholars Academy, and the High School for Enterprise, Business and Technology. The arts and athletics departments are shared jointly between the three schools, meaning that in these classes students from all three schools attend together. This allows for the campus to maintain the offerings of a large high school while having the intimacy of a small school setting. Interested candidates should email a resume/cv and cover letter to search committee chair Jeff W. Ball at jball3@schools.nyc.gov as soon as possible. Interested candidates are also strongly encouraged to include in their email a YouTube, google drive or Vimeo link to a rehearsal, performance or lesson led by the candidate, although this is not required. Thank you and we look forward to reviewing your application.
