2020 All-State and Winter Conference Update

Posted on July 27, 2020

My Fellow Music Educators:
Let me start by thanking you for the outpouring of support and guidance as I navigate my first year as your NYSSMA President.  The past five months have been filled with many difficult decisions and I want you to know that I do listen to the membership and always appreciate your feedback.
It is with a great deal of sadness, and an abundance of caution for the safety of thousands of students and adults, I must announce that CONFERENCE ALL-STATE along with the 2020 WINTER CONFERENCE is CANCELLED.  Reasons out of our control, including social distancing regulations, both for rehearsals and student rooming, as well as regulations on use and capacity of the Eastman Theater factored in this decision. Please note that Jazz at Lincoln Center (January 2021) is also cancelled.
In addition to the 2020 Winter Conference in Rochester, please note that all New York State AREA ALL-STATE FESTIVALS for the 2020-2021 academic school year have also been CANCELLED.
Selections for the 2020 All-State ensembles are complete. Accepted students and alternates will be sent letters in late August acknowledging their status.  While we cannot have the festival, we believe it is important to acknowledge the musical efforts of those students who applied by recognizing their acceptance into our prestigious ensembles. We hope that in some small way teachers, families, and friends can find a way to celebrate the accomplishment of making a New York All-State Ensemble.
The times ahead will be tough for our profession. Remember to reach out to your Zone Advocacy Representative as needed.  The advocacy task force is listed here.
As always, I am here for you and your needs. Please reach out whenever you need.
My sincere love and support,
Dr. David M. Brown
